Yellow And White Lines On Roads
Why
Do Some Roads Have Yellow Lines While Others Have White?
engineeringinsider
Ever wondered Why roads
have those Lines dividing them?
What could those Yellow
and White lines on the road mean?
What purpose do they
serve?.
Well, today we will be
throwing some light on these road markings. What they mean and what utility
they serve? So let’s begin!
It’s all about road safety.
White
Lines:
White lines and patterns
on the road are of utmost importance for traffic control and management. They
signify certain rules which are for safety. They are these types:
Solid White lines at the edge
of the road:
They mark out intersections and convey to exercise extra caution.

Horizontal Solid Lines:
These lines stretch on to the road. They typically provide a warning that obstacles can cross the path of the vehicle. They are generally visible near intersections, zebra crossings, and railway crossings.

Solid Horizontal Line in Front:
If you see a solid horizontal line in front of you. It typically means that you have to stop.

In this case please
ensure that you stop completely before the line. Bumper should be behind the
line always.
It prevents
inconvenience to the pedestrians. Also, avoids a traffic ticket.
Horizontal White Lines in
Succession:
Several horizontal lines in succession indicate a rumble strip.

Rumble strips are like
mini speed breakers. They are designed to force a vehicle to reduce its
speed. They also alert the driver of impending obstacles on the road ahead.
Vertical Solid White Lines:
Typically found at the opposite edges of the road. These lines run throughout the length of the road.

It marks the area from
where overtaking will be harmful. Needless to mention that one should always
drive between these lines.
These lines mark the
total usable area of the road.
White
Dashed Lines -
These are horizontal
dashed white lines they indicate the center of the road.
They enable a driver to
be aware of the direction the road is taking. It helps to navigate properly
when the vehicle is running at high speed.
If the dashes are close
to each other then you may not cross to the other lane. If the dashes are far
apart then you can change the lane with due caution.
The solid white line at
the center of the road indicates that lanes must not be changed.
Yellow
Lines :
Yellow lines are Yellow
in colour as it enhances on-road visibility. They are more prevalent on
highways than on city roads.
That’s because highways
require a safer environment to function.
These lines are easy to
spot and generally, a solid yellow line indicates that one must not cross over
even if everything on the other side clear.
If there is a yellow line
on your side of the lane but not in the opposite lane then this means that its
ok for oncoming traffic to overtake. They are of these types:
Double Yellow Lines: Double yellow lines indicates that it is
strictly prohibited to cross. Under no circumstances, a vehicle is allowed
to cross the lane.
Single Yellow line: A single yellow line in some places marks a
bus lane. Private or other vehicles are not allowed to cross over to this lane.
Yellow line or white
line, these lines are drawn by professional engineers who value a driver safety
on road. Hence these lines should always be obeyed for the greater good.
So now You know what
these Markings mean.
