WHAT MAKES SOMETHING FIREPROOF - Nowadays many modern materials are less combustible than they used to be. The term "fireproof" is actually a misnomer, because almost anything containing carbon, if hot enough, can combust and catch fire. "Fire resistant" and "flame retardant" are more accurate terms. When used properly, these fire protective measures can interrupt the burning process. For instance, typical plastic is combustible because it has a lot of carbon and hydrogen available to fuel a fire. Gasoline also has carbon and hydrogen available — and it's volatile, so gasoline can evaporate easily, making it highly combustible. In contrast, a fire resistant material is one that doesn't burn easily. One example of this is the artificial stone used in kitchen countertops, like the DuPont brand Corian. The plastic of a Corian countertop is filled with finely ground rocks made of hydrated aluminum oxide, a chemical compound that doesn't burn. These rocks lower the fuel value (the amount of carbon available for combustion) of the countertop, making it more fire resistant. The aluminum oxide brought water with it, so when you compounded the two together [the plastic and hydrated aluminum oxide], what you in essence had was rocks that on a microscopic basis were wet. And you had them in a plastic matrix, so it was really, really hard to get any heat generated from this. Although the rock attracts and holds water molecules, it does not get wet enough to form a puddle. Water keeps the countertop cool and helps block heat from getting any fuel. Countertops like Corian don't have much plastic — there's just enough to hold the rock together.

On Dec. 30, 1903, a spark from a stage light set Chicago's Iroquois Theatre ablaze.

"The stage and the curtain and the rest caught fire," said Bill Carroll, grandson of the theatre's co-owner and adjunct professor of chemistry at Indiana University Bloomington.

"There were insufficient exits, and it was terrible."

Over 600 people died in the disaster — the deadliest single-building fire in U.S. history.

Nowadays, this probably wouldn't happen, because many modern materials are less combustible than they used to be.

But what makes certain materials fireproof?

The term "fireproof" is actually a misnomer, because almost anything containing carbon, if hot enough, can combust and catch fire.

"Fire resistant" and "flame retardant" are more accurate terms, Carroll told Live Science.

When used properly, these fire protective measures can interrupt the burning process.

For instance, typical plastic is combustible because it has a lot of carbon and hydrogen available to fuel a fire.

"And you had them in a plastic matrix, so it was really, really hard to get any heat generated from this."

Although the rock attracts and holds water molecules, it does not get wet enough to form a puddle.

Water keeps the countertop cool and helps block heat from getting any fuel.

If there were a heat source (for instance, a lit cigarette resting on a Corian countertop), it would need to boil away the water surrounding the aluminum oxide first in order to then heat up the fuel, or the plastic molecules, enough to burn.

Moreover, countertops like Corian don't have much plastic — there's just enough to hold the rock together, Carroll said.

Fuel and heat are two sides of the fire tetrahedron, a triangular pyramid in which each side represents the elements necessary for fire.

The other two sides are oxygen and a sustainable chemical reaction, Carroll explained.

Most materials — aside from granite and asbestos, which are among the rare materials that are actually, literally fireproof — can be made more or less combustible only by eliminating one or more sides of the fire tetrahedron, he said.

The fire tetrahedron includes heat, fuel, oxygen and a sustainable chain reaction.

Unlike fire resistance — the properties that make it hard for a fire to either start in the first place or keep going — chemicals known as flame retardants can help to slow or extinguish an already-burning fire.

Chemical flame retardants contain chlorine, bromine, nitrogen, phosphorus, boron or metals.

One way flame retardants work is through the formation of a substance known as char foam.

When a piece of toast burns, for example, a char forms on the outside, which insulates the undamaged bread on the inside.

Once a fire starts on an object treated with a char foam-inducing flame retardant, a chemical reaction within the retardant bubbles up to create a rigid, inflammable foam out of the char from the initial burning.

This char foam then insulates the fuel from oxygen and, to some extent, heat, Carroll said. "[The char] kind of builds its own cocoon."

Flame retardant use has mushroomed since the 1970s, but it has sparked a controversy over the past few decades because of its potential toxicity.

Brominated fire retardant chemicals, banned in the U.S. since 2004, worked well at putting out fires, but weren't permanently bound to the material, for example a mattress, Carroll said.

That meant the chemical could potentially leave the mattress and end up in the dust or air, where it could be inhaled or ingested.

That's cause for concern, because these chemicals are linked to a slew of health problems; for instance they might disrupt thyroid function, interrupt the immune system and increase cancer risk, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

"New strategies for making fire retardants [are] to either bind the chemical to the mattress or make it another polymer [a long, repeating molecule chain], another absolutely huge molecule that doesn't migrate," he told Live Science.

In contrast, brominated fire retardants are smaller molecules that can easily leave materials and objects.

Can fire resistant materials and flame retardants be relied upon for fire safety?

They do work well, but think of them as the second line of defense, Carroll said.

Although it may seem like rather simple advice, keep fire, such as candles, out of bedrooms and carefully tend to stoves and other fire sources in the kitchen.

"Don't have a fire where you don't want a fire in the first place," he said.

COMMON CARCINOGENS YOU SHOULD KNOW - A carcinogen is something that can cause you to have cancer. It may be a substance in the air, a product you use, or a chemical in foods and drinks. Your chance of getting sick depends on many things. How much you've been exposed to it is part of it. Your genes also play a role. It doesn't matter whether you're a smoker or breathing in someone else's smoke. At least 70 chemicals in tobacco are known to cause cancer by damaging your DNA. Radon gas occurs in small amounts in nature, where it's harmless. But if it builds up indoors and you breathe it in, radon breaks down the lining of your lungs. The tough, tiny fibers in asbestos help strengthen products like roof shingles, ceiling tiles, and car parts. Yet if these fibers break free and you breathe them in, they get lodged inside your lungs. When some vegetables, like potatoes, are heated to high temps, they give off a chemical called acrylamide. From plywood to some fabrics, formaldehyde is used in many household products. Most skin cancer cases are due to Ultraviolet rays. The more booze you drink, the greater your odds of getting certain kinds of cancers. Bacon, salami, pepperoni, sausage -- any meat that's been preserved or flavored raises your chances of getting colon cancer. Trucks, buses, trains, and even some cars run on diesel fuel. The gas and soot in diesel engine exhaust are believed to cause lung cancer and other types of cancer. Aside from exhaust, polluted outdoor air contains dust and traces of metals and solvents that can lead to cancer.

Symbol: μ, mu.” One millionth of a meter works out at 0.0001 cm or 0.001 mm. A human hair is around 0.0889 mm. Most filters can have their effectiveness at removing pollutants measured by how low their micron score is. For example, a water filter that protects down to 1 micron, will block any particles larger than this from passing through. Anything smaller than 1 micron may continue through and be part of your drinking water. Water pollutants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and by knowing exactly what you’re looking for, you stand a much greater chance of stopping it. For a water filter to protect against the smallest virus particles, it would need to have a filter capable of working down to below 0.004 microns. The micron rating is not the only thing to be considered when buying a home water filter.

Not all water filters were created equally. Find out what a micron is, and why they are so important to water filters.

A human hair is around 0.0889 mm and there are 25,4000 microns in one inch.
You might ask what this little science lesson has to do with water filters?
Well most filters can have their effectiveness at removing pollutants measured by how low their micron score is.
For example, a water filter that protects down to 1 micron, will block any particles larger than this from passing through.
Anything smaller than 1 micron may continue through and be part of your drinking water.
Water pollutants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and by knowing exactly what you’re looking for, you stand a much greater chance of stopping it.
The table below shows some common water pollutants and their sizes in microns.

Viruses               0.004 - 0.1
Note the size of virus particles. These include E-coli, hepatitis, and legionnaires disease.
For a water filter to protect against the smallest virus particles, it would need to have a filter capable of working down to below 0.004 microns.
Actually, to be guaranteed protection then an ultraviolet filter would be needed too.
The only methods of home water filtration that work on this scale are reverse osmosis, and distillation.
Now water distillation cannot be measured in microns, but reverse osmosis can.
An RO membrane can filter down to an amazing 0.0001 microns or 0.00000001 cm.
Compare this with the most effective whole house filter that I am aware of, the Aquasana Rhino, which fights water contaminants down to 0.35 microns, and a typical carbon filter which could work from anywhere between 0.5 – 20 microns.
Each system has it’s positive and negative aspects, and the micron rating is not the only thing to be considered when buying a home water filter.
For example, a problem with chlorine would not require such strict filtration. Be aware though, that just any old water filter will not be a solution to water pollution for every problem.
Certain contaminants will only be removed by certain water filter types.

How do you find out if there's asbestos in your home?

People who were old enough to use a hair dryer in the 1970s may remember their first exposure to the fear of asbestos when their dryers were recalled as a health threat [source: CPSC].
Others may have grown up with warnings about staying away from attic insulation or old pipe wrapping in basements, but are these concerns dated now that the world is more aware of the dangers of asbestos exposure?
Asbestos has been a part of the modern built world for more than a century because it is flame resistant, very long lasting and an excellent insulating material.
Many compound materials benefit from asbestos because of its taut fiber form.
When materials with asbestos are left alone, as manufactured and pressed or mixed together, asbestos can be pretty hard to break down.
Using any process or pressure to cut, sand or dig into asbestos-containing parts, however, releases dust shards of fiber particles, launching the asbestos into the air.
When the particles are breathed in, they are either subsequently released through exhaling, or they lodge themselves into the organs and air passageways, often causing lung diseases and abnormal, cancerous growths.
Mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis are linked to asbestos exposure in the home and workplace, though since the late 1970s, bans and regulations have helped lessen the risks [sources: EPACPSC].
Is asbestos just an old concern, or is it a continuing, modern problem? Could there be asbestos in your home?
Maybe for sure, maybe not much and maybe none at all, but it's worth brushing up on the subject.
Air Apparent?
If your home was built in 1980 or later, it isn't likely to have asbestos components, and if it does, they would have to be labeled accordingly.
Homes built before the 1970s likely do have asbestos in their construction materials, which might include the following:
·          insulation: attic and wall insulation in houses built from 1930 through 1950 (and homes with vermiculite insulation up through 1990)
·          heat-proofing surrounds: boards and wall and floor treatments around wood-burning stoves and older furnaces
·          heat and water pipes: exterior wraps and adhesives
·          floor and ceiling tiles: in sheet and drop-tile forms
·          roofing and siding: shingles and sheets with composites of concrete and asphalt
·          wall and ceiling treatments: thick, decorative or soundproofing coatings that resemble popcorn-like grooves or dried foam cottage cheese
·          walls, corners and gaps: joint compounds and patching materials commonly contained asbestos [source: EPA]
These are just some of the most common areas where asbestos products were used, and unfortunately, checking to see if it's in your own home isn't a matter of just eyeing the sources.
Asbestos isn't identifiable by sight alone, and it's odorless and unlabeled if used before bans were instituted.
Only testing at the microscopic level confirms the presence of asbestos, and this should always be left to a trained professional.
If you suspect that your home, whether a rental or owned property, has hidden asbestos or areas of asbestos dust, it's best to leave everything as is -- the EPA even advises against dusting or vacuuming suspect areas [source: EPA].
Most of all don't do anything abrasive to the area that could cause the release of particles if no dust is visible [source: EPA].
Contact an asbestos professional who can test and recommend ways to remove or cover and contain the asbestos materials if found.
Maybe you're fearful that asbestos is hanging out where you live. How worried should you be?
RELIABLE INFO
Many Web sites on asbestos appear to be backed by institutions, medical associations or academic centers but are in fact linked to law firms. While some of the information may be well researched, turning to official sources like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institutes of Health, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration will provide less biased data.
Adios Asbestos?
Living with asbestos is a reality for many who reside in older homes, but with containment, covering and sealing -- or encapsulation -- or removal by a professional, the risk of harmful exposure is low [source: EPA].
A joint paper by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Lung Association (ALA) summarizes the health risks as being greatest for those with heavy exposure in factory settings or those involved in demolition work, mining and milling.
Those exposed to small amounts in ordinary life are a lot less likely to develop health problems [sources: CPSCEPA].
In fact, the best thing to do with asbestos material in good condition is to leave it alone [source: CPSC].
Some individuals exposed to asbestos never develop health problems, but as many as 200 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma linked to asbestos in the United States each year [source: EPA].
Lung cancer and asbestosis, which is mostly fatal, is considered a high-exposure outcome for those who breathed in prolonged and significant amounts of asbestos [source: EPA].
And the EPA emphasizes that asbestos-related lung cancer is much lower for the general population and asbestosis is "rarely caused by neighborhood or family exposure" [source: EPA].
Most people in the United States can breathe a sigh of relief that asbestos contact will be minimal if asbestos in their home is left undisturbed or left to the professionals to remove or contain.
