The Dangers of Ozone
There is a growing amount of written material regarding the use of ozone generators to improve indoor air quality.
Unfortunately, much of the material makes claims and draws conclusions without substantiation or sound science.
There are even some vendors which suggest that their devices have been approved by the federal government, despite the fact that there is not one agency within the federal government which has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces.
The EPA published several documents which highlight the risks and dangers of ozone and why ozone generators should be avoided.
Let’s take a look at why you should never use an ozone generator to help improve your indoor air quality.
Why is Ozone Dangerous?
Ozone is a tiny molecule which is composed of three oxygen atoms. It is highly reactive which makes it an unstable and potentially toxic gas.
Ground-level ozone is considered to be a major component of smog which plagues larger cities during the summertime and has been tied to a variety of potential health risks.
Health Effects of Ozone
The EPA has reported there is a variety of health effects associated with high levels of ozone.
This may include decreased lung function, throat irritation, severe asthma symptoms, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, irritation of lung tissue, and the higher sensitivity to respiratory infection.
They went on to note that there were additional risk factors which can perpetuate the side effects of ozone such as undertaking activities which raise breathing rates (such as exercising indoors), certain pre-existing lung diseases, and greater duration of exposure.
4 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Air Purifiers that Produce Ozone
Not only is ozone potentially dangerous to your health, it may not even work at all.
Below are four reasons why you should never use an air purifier that produces ozone.
1. Ozone Generators May Not Work at All
Some manufacturers suggest that ozone will render nearly every chemical contaminant in the home harmless by producing a chemical reaction.
This is incredibly misleading because a thorough review of scientific research has shown that in order for many of the dangerous chemicals found indoors to be eliminated the chemical reaction process may take months or even years.
Other studies have also (PDF) noted that ozone cannot effectively remove carbon monoxide or from outside.
If used at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone applied to indoor air pollution does not effectively remove viruses, mold, bacteria, or other biological pollutants.
2. The Chemical Reaction Can Be Dangerous
Even if ozone generators were proven to be effective at eliminating these chemicals, there are certain side effects everyone must be aware of.
Many of the chemicals ozone reacts to results in a variety of harmful by-products.
For example, when ozone was mixed with chemicals from new carpet in a laboratory setting, the ozone reduced many of the chemicals but created a variety of dangerous organic chemicals in the air.
While the target chemicals were reduced, the dangerous byproducts rendered the process moved.
3. Ozone Generators Do Not Remove Particulates
A third factor to consider when looking at ozone generators is that they do not remove particulates such as dust or pollen from the air.
This includes the particles which are primarily responsible for allergic reactions.
To combat this, some ozone generators include an ionizer which disperses negatively charged ions into the air.
In recent analysis’s, this process was found to be less competent in the removal of air-borne molecules of dust, smoke, pollen, and mold spores than HEPA filters and electrostatic precipitators.
4. It Is Impossible to Predict Exposure Levels
The EPA notes that it is increasingly difficult to determine the actual concentration of ozone produced by an ozone generator because so many different factors come into play.
Concentrations will be higher if more powerful devices used in smaller spaces.
Whether or not the interior doors are closed rather than open will affect concentrations as well.
Additional factors which affect concentration levels include how many materials and furnishings are in the room to react with ozone, the level of outdoor air ventilation, and the proximity of a person to the ozone generating device.
HEPA Filters: The Safer & More Effective Solution
Choosing a HEPA filter is a significantly safer and effective solution than an ozone generator.

HEPA filters are the only type of air cleaners which meet specific EPA standards for efficacy.
This means when you purchase an air purifier which relies on this type of technology, you can rest easy knowing exactly what the level of effectiveness will be.
In many cases, this type of filter is often combined with other technologies, such as activated carbon, to provide even better results.
Utilizing a pre-filter and activated carbon, air purifiers can remove solid, chemical, and gaseous pollutants from the air and dramatically improve indoor air quality.

OZONE MACHINE DANGERS - Each molecule of ozone gas contains three atoms of oxygen. This combination is unstable and tends to react with a variety of carbon-based compounds. This high level of reactivity makes ozone very good at destroying germs during water treatment. Unfortunately, it also makes it dangerous to human health, since the ozone can react with molecules in your lungs in much the same way. The concentrations of ozone you would need to kill bacteria and viruses are high enough they would also harm humans and other animals. Machines intended for household, office or health care center use that generate ozone at levels over 0.05 parts per million or are marketed using claims that they have medical benefits are banned by federal regulations. When ozone reacts with molecules lining the interior of your lungs, it irritates the mucus membrane and can cause fluid to leak into the lungs -- a condition called pulmonary edema.

Some companies and websites market devices called ozone machines or ozone generators by claiming that ozone is beneficial for human health or reduces indoor air pollution.
There is no evidence to support these claims; in fact, the available evidence tends to indicate exactly the opposite, that high concentrations of ozone are dangerous for you.
At least one couple has been sentenced to jail by a district court for marketing these devices as a treatment for a medical condition.
Ozone
Each molecule of oxygen gas that you breathe contains two atoms of the element oxygen.
Each molecule of ozone gas, by contrast, contains three atoms of oxygen. This combination is unstable and tends to react with a variety of carbon-based compounds.
This high level of reactivity makes ozone very good at destroying germs during water treatment.
Unfortunately, it also makes it dangerous to human health, since the ozone can react with molecules in your lungs in much the same way.
Regulations
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Code of Federal Regulations regard ozone as toxic and without any demonstrated medical use.
According to the FDA, the concentrations of ozone you would need to kill bacteria and viruses are high enough they would also harm humans and other animals.
Machines intended for household, office or health care center use that generate ozone at levels over 0.05 parts per million or are marketed using claims that they have medical benefits are banned by federal regulations.
Hazards
When ozone reacts with molecules lining the interior of your lungs, it irritates the mucus membrane and can cause fluid to leak into the lungs -- a condition called pulmonary edema.
Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath and coughing.
Some people are more susceptible than others; people with respiratory system disorders like asthma are at especially high risk.
The Environmental Protection Agency has found that some of the devices currently on the market can generate enough ozone to drive concentrations in your home up above safe levels.
Considerations
There is no need or reason to install an ozone-producing device in your home.
Many manufacturers of these devices claim that ozone can remove pollutants or germs or benefit human health in some way.
There is no evidence to support these claims; in fact, the concentrations of ozone required to get rid of germs and pollutants are easily far more than enough to harm you and your family.
You should be wary of manufacturers or websites that make these kinds of claims.

Chlorine has been the preferred sanitizing component in almost every pool for many years.

With its widely known drawbacks, many pool owners are considering alternative sanitizers to chlorine that will still keep the swimming pool clean without the side effects.
1. Ozone generators

As people begin to look for chlorine alternatives that will work for them, they turn to solutions that are a little outside of the box.
There are several reasons why an ozone generator is a helpful chlorine alternative that should be on your radar. The first of which is that it can help you to break down all sorts of organic contaminants.
When you make use of an ozone generator in your pool, you will be able to lessen the number of chemicals that you need to use.
In some cases, people have been able to get away with using 90% fewer chemicals than they used to.
The problem with this solution is that you won’t be able to avoid using chemicals entirely.
This isn’t a method that sanitizes your pool for you, so you will need another type of solution to use in conjunction with your ozone generator.
Some people actually use these ozone generators along with a traditional chlorine setup.
You can choose to use other sanitation solutions instead of chlorine too, of course. You’ll just need something else to do the sanitizing.

Cons:
Ozone generators aren’t going to be the most cost-effective solution. They actually cost quite a bit of money and the price tag is likely to scare some people away.
If you are willing to make the investment, then it can be a worthwhile purchase. It isn’t something that will sanitize your pool, but it can reduce the amount of chlorine or other chemicals that your pool will need.
2. Non-Chlorine Shock
Non-Chlorine ShockNon-chlorine shock is an excellent way to deal with certain pollutants that can get into your pool. It isn’t entirely unusual for bodily fluids to contaminate a pool.
You need a reliable solution to deal with these problems and non-chlorine shock is going to be able to oxidize these contaminants for you.
This essentially burns away the dead organic matter that you need to get out of your pool.
The problem with this method is that it also isn’t going to work as a sanitizer.
This is another useful tool that is going to need to work in tandem with certain chemicals.
Many people wind up pairing the non-chlorine shock with a certain amount of chlorine.
If you are trying to avoid chlorine specifically, then using another chemical in its place is going to work just fine.
It should also be noted that outdoor pools won’t need non-chlorine shock quite as much.
Natural sunlight will do the same thing as the non-chlorine shock over time.
This non-chlorine shock is mostly used for indoor pools and hot tubs. Regardless, it is a useful tool that you may find will help your overall swimming experience.
Pros:
This can burn away the dead organic matter in your pool to make your swimming experience more pleasant.
You will be able to purchase this non-chlorine shock at a reasonable price too. It is a fairly cost-effective method for making your pool a little nicer.
If you have an indoor pool, then using this non-chlorine shock is going to be an absolute must.
Cons:
Non-chlorine shock doesn’t work to sanitize your pool and will require you to use other chemicals.
This isn’t a solution that can completely replace chlorine. It is merely another useful tool to add to your bag of tricks.
Also, you may not find the non-chlorine shock to be quite as useful if you own an outdoor pool since the sunlight can also oxidize dead organic matter for you.
3. Salt Water

Sometimes chlorine has a tendency to hurt people’s eyes and not everyone finds it pleasant to swim in a chlorinated pool.

This is a natural way to sanitize your pool that will be very easy on you.
Saltwater can actually chlorinate your pool in a natural way. This is completely different from adding chlorine chemicals to your pool.
The salt winds up becoming charged and will break down into chlorine. This makes it so that swimming in your pool won’t dry out your skin or hurt your eyes, so it is easy to see why people are making the decision to go this route.
You will also be able to save some money by having a salt water pool. Buying salt and properly maintaining it is going to be more cost-effective than purchasing chemicals.
You’ll be able to have a more enjoyable time while you’re swimming and you will be able to avoid the negative things associated with chlorine.
It’s a good situation and it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to make the necessary changes.
Pros:
Saltwater is going to be able to break down into natural chlorine to keep your pool completely sanitized.
You will be able to enjoy swimming in your pool without having to feel concerned about drying out your skin or harming your eyes.
It makes swimming a lot more fun for many people. This is becoming a more prevalent option all over the world and it isn’t hard to implement.
Cons:
You will still need to take care of the pool like you would when using normal chemicals. Also, you do need to replace the salt in your pool every so often.
It actually lasts for a long time, so replacing it once every four or five years should suffice. It’s actually a really good solution with very few negatives to mention.
4. Mineral System

If you want to purchase a sanitizing tool that is going to be simple to use, then buying a mineral system for your pool is a good idea.
It doesn’t take a lot of effort to maintain this mineral system. You just hook it up and it works to sanitize your pool very effectively.
It will release minerals into the pool water that will help to soften the water and clean things up nicely.
This is a really good thing to own if you want some help controlling bacteria and algae.
If you use this system regularly, then you shouldn’t have any problems with algae or bacteria developing in your pool. You won’t have to buy as many costly chemicals either.
You will still need to use chemicals on occasion to maintain the right pH balance, but it will wind up saving you money in the long run.
The initial cost of a mineral system may be a bit steep for some people. Overall, they aren’t outrageously priced, so you should be able to purchase one without having an issue.
It just depends on your personal budget and how much you are willing to invest in your pool. This solution can make your swimming experience that much better, so it is worth looking into.

A mineral system is really easy to use and maintaining it isn’t going to take a lot of effort either.
It will soften your pool water while cleaning things up. It’s excellent for helping you to control algae and bacteria.
You will be able to use significantly less chlorine than usual and it will save you money in the long run.
Cons:
The initial investment might be too much for some people to justify. It doesn’t eliminate the need for chlorine or other chemicals completely.
Regardless, it is a good solution that people have been turning to more frequently. It is just up to you to decide whether or not the cost is worth it or not.
5. Bromine

There are some aspects of bromine that make it less desirable, though. Sunlight makes bromine less effective, so it doesn’t work quite as well in outdoor pools.
This doesn’t mean that bromine isn’t a viable option, but it does mean that you will need more of it.
To put it in simple terms, sunlight burns away certain parts of both bromine and chlorine.
Chlorine is more protected from this effect, so it works better in outdoor pools.
Bromine can still be used in outdoor pools, but you may need a lot more of it than usual to counteract the sunlight. For this reason, it might not be the most practical solution.
Pros:
You can enjoy a pool that is more balanced and less needy if you make use of bromine. Bromine works to provide you with a sanitized and stable swimming environment.
It is a good chemical that will be simple to use and it can allow you to swim without worrying about your safety. It’s excellent for indoor pools and is also commonly used in spas.
Cons:
Bromine simply isn’t as easy to use in an outdoor pool.
The sunlight makes it so that you will need much more bromine than usual to keep your pool sanitized.
The costs of this can wind up becoming pretty high and it might not be a practical option for many people.
Bromine is a bit more expensive than chlorine anyway, so it can definitely be an inconvenience when you have to buy so much of it.

You’ll spend about $725 for PHMB chemical to maintain a 10,000-gallon pool for a 16-week summer season.

While useful in industrial (purifying water, bleaching wood pulp, detoxifying cyanide waste) and medical applications (killing bacteria, viruses, odors) where strict standards are followed for manufacturing and using the generators, the use of ozone in smaller home or personal devices could be harmful. Those used in industrial and medical settings are used in unoccupied situations.

How Do Ozone Generators Work?

Characteristics of Ozone?
Ozone is oxygen but in a different form. It contains three oxygen molecules and not two.

The third molecule can detach and apply itself to other chemicals or substances. This ability to attach to other substances means the ozone is able to alter these substances. This is why ozone is generated and used for certain purposes.

Using Ozone
Ozone is found in layers of the earth's atmosphere where it filters out harmful ultra-violet rays.
When ozone is found at the ground level, it is harmful to the respiratory system.

Used as an industrial gas, ozone cannot be created and then transported because it decays quickly. Instead, it must be created on site.

Because it oxidizes metal, the choices for its containment are limited.

Titanium, stainless steel, glass, aluminum and polymers polytetrafluorethylene and polyvinylidene fluoride are used to contain ozone.

Generating Ozone
Ozone can be generated in two ways -- silent corona discharge and ultra-violet radiation.

The ultra-violet generation is like the process of ozone creation in the upper atmosphere and the corona discharge is similar to the way ozone is generated in lightning.

Ultra-violet generation involves the use of mercury and creates issues around proper disposal.

The silent corona method produces more ozone than the other method and is a much more efficient process.

Silent Corona Discharge
The silent corona discharge method consists of a unit with these parts--dust filters, gas dryers, a source of oxygen, a generator, a contact unit and torch destructor. Dryers and filters clean the oxygen.

The ozone is generated from the cleaned oxygen by electrical discharge just like lightning.

By splitting the oxygen and creating single molecules, the single molecules can attach to oxygen (O2) and create O3. The O3 is then discharged into the room.

Using An Ozone Generator
Ozone generators are controversial.

While useful in industrial (purifying water, bleaching wood pulp, detoxifying cyanide waste) and medical applications (killing bacteria, viruses, odors) where strict standards are followed for manufacturing and using the generators, the use of ozone in smaller home or personal devices could be harmful.

Those used in industrial and medical settings are used in unoccupied situations.

Ozone can cause respiratory irritation so when a device is used in a confined space the device should follow Food and Drug Administration guidelines.

Public health standards have been set that indicate the maximum amount of ozone that is safe for humans to interact with.

For an ozone generator to produce enough ozone to kill bacteria and viruses, it must exceed the public health standards.

OZONE AIR PURIFIERS - Ozone can mask odors making the air seem fresher and cleaner. However, ozone generators do not actually filter out the small particles that trigger asthma. Inhaling ozone, even in small amounts, can irritate the lungs. Specific effects may include throat irritation, coughing, chest pain and shortness of breath, as well as an increased risk of respiratory infections.

Despite manufacturers' claims, ozone air purifiers don't remove asthma triggers from the air.

In fact, inhaled ozone can make asthma worse.

Ozone generators sold as air purifiers intentionally produce the gas ozone.
Ozone can mask odors by changing the chemical composition of particles or other gases in the air, making the air seem fresher and cleaner.

However, ozone generators do not actually filter out the small particles that trigger asthma.

Inhaling ozone, even in small amounts, can irritate the lungs.

Specific effects may include throat irritation, coughing, chest pain and shortness of breath, as well as an increased risk of respiratory infections.

Some ozone air purifiers are made with an ion generator, sometimes called an ionizer, in the same unit.

You can also buy ionizers as separate units.

Ionizers do remove particles from the air, causing them to attach to nearby surfaces or to each other and settle out of the air — but they may generate unwanted ozone.

Air filters that remove small particles — such as high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters — are effective in removing allergens from the air, without posing any ozone concerns.

What Ozone Is and Why It Is Dangerous

Most people, even if they do not know what ozone is, have heard of it, usually in context of the ozone layer in the atmosphere that protects the earth from ultraviolet light.
However, ozone is not so benevolent a substance when we come into close contact with it.
As the Environmental Protection Agency says: "Good Up High, Bad Nearby."
Ozone is a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms, rather than the two that comprise a "normal" oxygen molecule.
The third atom can relatively easily become detached from the other two, and once free, it will interact with other substances.
One of these "other substances" is your body.
Even small amounts of ozone, according to the EPA, "can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and throat irritation," as well as even worse effects.
Those with asthma may find their conditioned worsened by exposure to ozone, and ozone also reduces the body's ability to combat respiratory infections.
