Human societies have made enormous technological leaps, especially in the 21st century.

Because of the technological prowess of the modern age, when we think of ancient civilizations, we don’t often marvel at the sophistication of their technology.

However, scientists recently discovered that the ancient Maya used a water filtration system so effective that it could still be adopted today.

Ancient Water Filtration Systems

Water is essential to supporting life. In fact, ancient civilizations developed their own methods of coping with the water needs of their communities.

Before 500 BC, humans had already begun using natural mineral resources for water purification and had pioneered distillation as a water filtration technique.

Scientists have found that in India people crushed seeds from the Moringa tree to reduce the cloudiness of water.

This method was found to be effective in reducing bacteria in water by over 90 percent.

Why should we be concerned about ancient water filtration systems?

Simply stated, today we need to meet the urgent clean water needs of disadvantaged populations.

In 2019, UNICEF and WHO estimated that 1 in 3 people don’t have access to clean drinking water.

While many cities have advanced water filtration technologies and can use methods like adding chemicals such as chlorine to disinfect water, the developing world may find these technologies prohibitively costly.

Therefore, scientists look to ancient water filtration techniques for guidance as to how water may be purified through more natural and less expensive methods.

As a result of these efforts, clean drinking water may be provided to more people.

The Discovery of a Water Filtration System in Tikal

The ancient city of Tikal is situated in modern-day Guatemala.

Recently, an excavation uncovered how this Mayan city purified water to meet their drinking needs.

Before this, the scientists explain that some people believed that the Mayans didn’t have any formal water filtration systems from a lack of data.

Comparatively, documented evidence showed how societies in Egypt, Greece, and South Asia obtained clean drinking water through using sand, gravel, plant, and cloth filtration systems.

Also, it has been found that ancient societies in North America used distillation to filter contaminants from spring water.

Previously, scientists conducted excavations in single test pits in only a few dozen of the ancient Mayan reservoirs.

Despite this, the excavation in Tikal explored one of the largest storage facilities of Mayan drinking water.

This led to discovering the oldest water filtration system in the Western hemisphere, which is also believed to be the most advanced among ancient civilizations.

How Did the Ancient City of Tikal Filter Water?

Tikal is one of the great cities of the Mayan civilization.

Many frequently refer to Tikal as the capital of ancient Maya.

Although Tikal is not situated near any large water bodies, it contains a large human population of about 60,000 people.

As a result, the Mayans had to develop a system of reservoirs around the city to meet the city’s water needs.

Scientists discovered a quartz and zeolite filter at one end of one of these reservoirs, called Corriental.

Quartz acts as a sieve to filter out pollutants in water.

Zeolite is a  naturally occurring volcanic mineral.

Because of its high pore density, Zeolite also absorbs particles in water.

The combination of crystalline quartz and zeolite would have effectively purified the water in the Corriental reservoir from harmful blue-green algae, microbes, and other toxins.

These toxins threaten water today.

What are the Next Steps After This Scientific Discovery?

The scientists involved in research on the water filtration system applied in the Corriental reservoir intend to continue to look for evidence that this system was also used in other Maya sites.

As zeolite is not a mineral naturally found in the city of Tikal, the Mayans likely brought it back after they had observed its effectiveness in water filtration.

This may mean that Mayans in other sites had similarly adopted this technology.

The mission of Save The Water™ is to conduct water research to identify and remove harmful contaminants in water, and to raise public awareness about water contamination and its health impacts.

Although Save The Water™ operates mainly in North America and follows scientific procedures established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the impact of our analytical research and water treatment technology is universally applicable.

In the late 1990s, our co-founder Frank Ramos came across information about cancer-causing chemicals in whales and dolphins. Specifically, he learned two facts: (1) whales and dolphins’ fat tissue contains 1,000 times more man-made, highly toxic chemicals (such as those found in rubber and plastics) than our human tissue; and (2) these creatures are collecting these chemicals through the water in which they live. Frank and his dear friend Allan founded Save the Water™ in 1999. Together, they spent ten years researching water contamination in the U.S., its extent, and the critical need to solve the problem. In July 2013, Save the Water suffered a devastating loss when Allan passed away after a long battle with cancer. Studies have shown that many many cancers are linked to environmental factors such as the water that we drink, including in the United States. Losing Allan reinforced the belief that we must take immediate actions to combat water pollution and continue our mission until we have achieved and sustained our vision: contamination-free, healthy water for all. We believe that this future is within our grasp. But we need your help to achieve this goal for our children and future generations.

As springtime thaws the country, many are sighing with relief as frost rescinds and flowers begin to bloom.

However, as the snow and ice melt away, few realize the lasting impact the winter season will have on the future of neighboring fresh bodies of water.

Salt, a universal melting solution for roads and walkways around the country, is slowly making freshwater in North America saltier.

This change in composition could lead to serious consequences, which could go as far as to threaten sources of human drinking water.

Since the 1940s, road salt, not too different from regular table salt, has been sprinkled on roads as a way to melt ice and protect drivers.

In fact, each year it is estimated that a stunning 23 million metric tons of salt are used throughout North America for this purpose alone.

This safety precaution may be well intended, but the mass salting of our roadways is consequently contaminating fresh water and posing threats to local ecosystems.

The Great Lakes

The Twin Cities in Minnesota, known for its chill and 10,000 lakes, served as a hotspot for scientists in a recent mass study of several hundred lakes.

The two cities straddle the Mississippi River, which since 1985 has shown an 85 percent increase in salt concentration.

This increase could only be caused by road salt runoff, experts say, because the salt essentially has nowhere else to go.

This point was driven home further when results showed that lakes within 500 meters of roads had higher salt levels than those further from roadways.

While the Mississippi River has the advantage of a flowing stream, which replenishes itself naturally, stagnant lakes and ponds are not so lucky.

Their water replenishes less frequently, making them the most vulnerable to pollution.

Experts go so far as to warn that failure to decrease salt use could result in lakes becoming too salty to support natural life by the year 2050.

These warnings strike eerily in unison with recent calls for fresh water preservation due to the sheer lack of it.

Separate researchers have found that most lakes are shallower than initially estimated in past limited studies, which in short means “less fresh water” than anyone has ever expected.

With 18 percent of the world’s fresh water found in the five Great Lakes, the salinization that was seen in and around these communities could have dire consequences.

Just three years ago in 2014, Lake Erie faced overwhelming algae and nutrient pollution that left 400,000 citizens in both the United States and Canadian sides of the lake without drinkable water.

Similar issues have been unfolding throughout the country, most famously in Flint, Michigan, where salty water played a part in degrading the city’s water pipe system.

Experts urge that people reflect on the direct impact humans have on freshwater ecosystems, not just through runoff, but agriculture, the disposal of waste, and land development.

Salinization is one of the many threats facing freshwater and even these startling numbers, according to researchers, are “likely an underestimation” due to a lack of long-term data from Canadian regions that also use heavy amounts of road salt.

Though local governments have cut back on salt usage, most did so because of rising costs, not because of the threat its use poses on waterways and the ecosystem.

It is necessary that governments not only recognize this threat but take steps to protecting and promoting the recovery of freshwater ecosystems.

The population is responsible as well to use alternative, eco-friendly ice melting options existing in most households, such as coffee grounds, sand, or beet juice.

By using alternatives to road salt, freshwater can be preserved for future generations.

The Concave Mirror And The Convex Mirror

Uses of the concave mirror and the convex mirror in our daily life

BY HEBA SOFFAR

Uses of the concave mirror

The concave mirror is a converging mirror so that it is used for many purposes.

It is used as a torch to reflect the light.

It is used in the aircraft landing at the airports to guide the aeroplanes,

It is used in shaving to get an enlarged and erect image of the face.

The concave mirror is used in front lights of cars to reflect the light.

It is used in marine lighthouses that are found at the marine ports and at the airports to guide the ships and it is used in the solar ovens.

The concave mirror is used in the solar ovens and the solar furnaces to collect a large amount of solar energy in the focus of the mirror for cooking food, heating water, recharging power backups, or melting metals respectively.

Concave mirrors are used in satellite dishes.

They are used in telescopes, dentists and ENT doctors use them to obtain a larger image than the original of the teeth, ear or skin, etc.

Concave mirrors are used in the electron microscopes and magnifying glasses.

They are used in the visual bomb detectors and they are used in the flashlight mirror of the camera.

Real image and Virtual image

The real image is formed as a result of the intersection of the reflected light rays.

It can be received on a screen and it is always inverted.

The virtual image is formed as a result of the intersection of the reflected light rays extensions.

It can not be received on a screen and it is always erect (upright).

The focus of the concave mirror

The focus of the concave mirror is produced due to the collection of the reflected rays emitted from a far object such as the sun.

The rays after being reflected collect in one lit point which is called the focus of the mirror that can be received on the screen.

The distance between the focus of the mirror and the pole of the mirror = ½ the radius of mirror curvature and it is called the focal length of the mirror.

When the incident light ray is parallel to the principal axis.

It reflects passing through the focus. When the incident light ray that passes through the focus, it reflects parallel to the principal axis.

When the incident light ray that passes through the center of curvature, It reflects back on itself.

Cases of formation of the images by the concave mirror

When the position of the object is very far, the position of the image is at the focus, the image is real and very tiny (dot).

The object is at a distance greater than the radius of curvature (after the center of curvature).

The image is at a distance greater than the focal length but less than the double of focal length (between the focus and the curvature).

The image is real, inverted and diminished (small).

When the object is at the center of curvature (at a distance equals the radius of curvature), the image will be at the curvature center.

The image will real, inverted, and equal to the object.

When the object is between the center of curvature and the focus (at a distance more than the focal length but less than the radius of curvature), the image is after the center of curvature (at a distance greater than the radius of curvature), the image is real, inverted and enlarged (magnified).

When the object is between the focus and the pole (at a distance less than the focal length, the image is behind the mirror, the image is virtual, upright (erect), and magnified.

When the object is at the focus, no image is formed, the image is at infinity where the rays penetrate as parallel.

Uses of the convex mirror

The convex mirror is used as side-view mirror on the passenger’s side of a car because it forms an erect and smaller image for the way behind the car.

The convex mirror is suitable for convenient shop and big supermarket and any other corner where need anti-thief, it is used in the turning off the road and parking.

Convex mirrors are used inside the buildings.

They are also used in making lenses of sunglasses.

They are used in the magnifying glass.

They are used in securities and they are used in telescopes.

They can be used as street light reflectors because they can spread the light over a bigger area.

They are put on the corners of roads so that you can see any cars coming to avoid the collisions and they are used as ceiling dome mirrors.

Properties of the formed image by the convex mirror

Wherever the position of the object in front of the convex mirror, the image is smaller than the object, it is upright (erect), it is virtual (not received on a screen).
