YOU HAVE ENORMOUS POTENTIAL - Just because it hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it’s impossible - The Guinness World Records book lists many of the greatest records set and the greatest potentials achieved. Records are forever being broken, so it is forever out of date. How fast does a human have the potential to run the mile today? We honestly don’t know. That is why we hold our breath during every Olympics. Take the fascinating case of the British middle-distance runner Roger Bannister. In the 1950s, experts concluded that the human body could not run a mile in less than four minutes. Then Bannister came along in 1954 and proved it could in fact be run in 3:59.4. Once Bannister broke the imaginary barrier, suddenly the floodgates opened; scores of runners started besting the four-minute mark every year, each one faster than the last. How fast does a human have the potential to run the mile today? We honestly don’t know. We don’t know the limits of our brain’s enormous potential to grow and adapt to changing circumstances. All we know is that this kind of change is possible. Keep this in mind the next time you feel stuck or challenged. Just because it hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

DRIVING SAFELY - No one plans to get into a car wreck, but accidents can and often do happen. Drivers get distracted by cell phones and text messages, take their eyes off the road or simply don't pay attention. Aggressive drivers hit the gas pedal too hard, switch lanes without warning or follow other drivers too closely. You can't prevent accidents entirely, but you can decrease their likelihood by practicing some good defensive driving skills. Defensive driving is all about anticipation -- knowing what's going on around you, predicting what might happen and knowing how to react quickly in case another driver catches you off-guard. It's also about protecting yourself so that you're less likely to be injured in a crash.
GRILLING MEAT - Is It a Cancer Risk? - There is some evidence that people who eat a lot of charred or very well done meat have a higher risk of cancer, particularly of the breast, prostate, colon, rectum, and pancreas. It is also known that when fat drips down onto hot coals, the resulting smoke contains cancer-causing chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The smoke can deposit PAHs onto the food being grilled. There is some evidence that people who work with PAHs have an increased risk of lung, skin, and bladder cancer. The keys are to minimize both the amount of time that meat is cooked at high heat and the amount of smoke in contact with the meat. Marinating meat with commercial mixtures of herbs and spices reduced the amount of HCAs in the cooked steak.
STATIC PRESSURE TO MONITOR TUNNEL VENTILATION - One of the best yardsticks for evaluating a tunnel ventilation system is measuring wind speed. There are many choices in handheld wind meters ranging from wind speed only units to combo models measuring wind speed, temperature, and humidity. If the wind speed is lower than desired, the next step is to check the static pressure with either a portable manometer or a ventilation control monitor. With the ventilation system operating at full capacity, the house pressure should be between 0.05 to 0.08". If the static pressure is higher, the most likely cause is restricted airflow through the air inlet curtain or cool cell pad. Check to make sure the curtains drop entirely below the wall openings and are not bunching at the bottom. If a cool cell system is part of the inlet, scale or algae may be clogging the openings. Scale refers to the buildup of minerals that hard water leaves behind as it evaporates during the cooling process. Heavy deposits of scale require a broom to dislodge the debris and then rinsing them off the pad with a low-pressure hose nozzle. The best way to deal with scale is to prevent it from forming in the first place. Adding a descaling treatment to the water helps keep the minerals in suspension and prevents them from sticking to the pad. Nutrients in the water allow algae to grow and block the openings in the pad.
RIDING A MOTORCYCLE ON THE OCEAN - How a Daredevil Managed to Ride a Motorcycle On the Ocean - Motorcross bikes don’t float, as a rule, and combustion engines and water don’t mix. So, the first step for Maddison was to keep his bike as dry as possible while surfing a wave. Maddison’s team fitted his KTM 250 SX with a rear paddle tire and added skis that wrapped around the front and rear tires, in order to make the machine buoyant. The design was extremely finicky and even minor design adjustments could throw the whole thing off. The original aluminum ski that worked on test runs in Idaho was too easily deformed with rocks kicked up by the bike so they had to improvise. Maddison’s team went through 12 iterations of the front ski before settling on a plastic composite material for the winning design. The front ski had fins on the bottom to provide some steering control while on the water. Mechanics also added an inflatable device onto his bike to keep it from sinking if he needed to bail, and stuffed foam into the air intake to prevent the bike from taking in water.
SODIUM POISONING - Sodium is one of many substances that our bodies need to function properly. Most of us know that too much salt in our diets is bad for people with high blood pressure. But most people don't realize that salt actually can be poisonous. Taking in a lot of sodium can overwhelm our back-up systems and cause dramatic increases in sodium levels. This can mean eating ordinary table salt, rock salt, or high-sodium foods like soy sauce. There are some medical conditions which can cause sodium levels to get too high. Too much sodium can cause dangerous, even fatal effects. When there's too much sodium in the bloodstream, water rushes out of our cells to dilute it. That's damaging to most cells; it's devastating to brain cells.
WATER PURIFICATION INNOVATIONS - Nanotechnology has a lot more potential to help clean up the world's drinking water. Filters fashioned from carbon nanotubes and alumina fibers could be capable of removing not just sediment and bacteria, but even traces of toxic elements such as arsenic. Sheets of graphene, a form of carbon that's just a single-atom thick are used to filter seawater. Algae-killer bacteria are able to get rid of microcystins and make the water safe to drink without using any potentially harmful chemicals. A handheld device called the SteriPEN, uses ultraviolet light to eradicate disease-causing microorganisms. Such portable water purification systems can destroy bacteria, viruses and protozoa, such as giardia and cryptosporidium, which can cause sickness.
WHAT IS VESSEL DRAFT - Different Drafts and Their Importance - The draft of a ship or boat is the distance between the surface of the water and the lowest point of the vessel. The measurement should be made as close to vertical as possible. The lowest point on a boat is found at different places in different designs and hull shapes. Sailing vessels have some of the deepest keels and large boats may need water as deep as some small ships. Tugboats have much of their mass below the waterline. This helps them push and tow ships without making the ride uncomfortable for the crew. Shallow draft vessels are built for getting to favorite beaches and fishing areas. Many militaries have developed hovercraft or shallow draft ships to protect coastlines and deliver troops and supplies directly to shore. Taking on heavy loads of passengers, equipment, or fuel can change your draft significantly. Observing the normal waterline can give you some idea of your change in draft. If you want to carry supplies or equipment then you can use the concept of displacement to make a close estimate of a loaded draft. Avoiding contact between underwater objects is important so every person driving the boat needs to be aware of the draft of the vessel. Depth markings usually don’t appear on navigation buoys, but sometimes special areas like anchorages are marked so scope ratio can be estimated before anchoring. Depth markings are more common along wharves and seawalls especially if there is a fuel dock or crane facility. A variety of vessels visit these kinds of facilities so knowing the depth is important. It is a good idea to carry and understand a chart or survey map even on an inland body of water. Don’t ever assume that a shallow area or sub-surface obstruction will be marked as a hazard.
