STROKE AND SMOKING - Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Smoking is one of the greatest risk factors for having a stroke. Smoking puts your brain at major risk by dramatically increasing the chances of having a stroke. Your risks multiply if you also have other risk factors such as being overweight, having high blood pressure and cholesterol, and getting too little exercise.

Stroke And
Smoking
A Look at Stroke Risk Associated With Smoking
Smoking puts your brain at major risk by dramatically increasing the chances of having a stroke.
And stroke is a major concern because it’s the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.
Smoking is one of the greatest risk factors for having a stroke.
However, your risks multiply if you also have other risk factors such as being overweight, having high blood pressure and cholesterol, and getting too little exercise.
Smokers are at risk of having a stroke nearly 10 years younger compared to the non-smoking general population.
Fortunately, the National Stroke Association says that as many as 80 percent of strokes can be prevented by addressing your lifestyle risks.
What Smoking Does to Your Circulation
Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood, which is one of the major ways that it contributes to having a stroke.
When there’s less oxygen in your blood, your heart has to work harder to pump the blood through your body compared to a non-smoker.
Smoking also makes blood clots more likely to form and increases the amount of plaque buildup in your arteries.
The combination of the blood clots and increased plaque are the right conditions for a stroke to occur.
The arteries leading to your brain are especially vulnerable to damage by smoking.
As these arteries shrink and tighten, it may be impossible for adequate blood flow to get to your brain and creates the right conditions for an aneurysm to occur.
Smoking damages smaller blood vessels, making them more likely to rupture.
Factors that Make Stroke More Likely
Not everyone has the same risk of having a stroke – not even all smokers.
Some people are at increased risk of stroke because of other health and lifestyle factors.
People with sleep disorders are at much greater risk of having a stroke.
Men with obstructive sleep apnea have nearly double the stroke risk of the general population, and women with sleep apnea also face increased risks, though not to the same degree.
The more severe the obstructive sleep apnea, the greater the stroke risk.
Women who use birth control pills are also at a significantly increased risk for stroke.
Medical and public health officials warn that women over age 35 should not smoke and take birth control pills, because these combined behaviors present a potentially deadly risk.
There is no safe amount of smoking for women on birth control pills.
Men who smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day are also at a greatly increased risk of stroke.

Effects of Stroke
Stroke can be fatal and can kill you instantly.

However, even if you’re lucky enough to survive having a stroke – which is the case nearly 85 percent of the time – you can be left with permanent damage after having a stroke.

People who have had strokes often need to go back to learning the basics.

After having a stroke, it is not unusual for people to be able to forget important details about their personal history, to become unable to recognize family members and friends, and even to need to learn how to walk and talk again.

Because the brain controls all of your body’s functions, a stroke can impact any one of them.

Many people struggle with coordination after a stroke.

Rehabilitation is possible, but is a lengthy process and the success rate depends largely upon how motivated you are and how severe the stroke was.

Many people are unable to return to their previous careers after a stroke, which can cause depression.

Prevention
Stroke is extremely preventable in the vast majority of cases.

Here are some of the things you can do to reduce your risk:

Quit smoking.  If you can’t quit, at least try to cut down. Recent studies have also shown that menthol cigarettes are linked to a higher risk of stroke, compared to non-menthol cigarettes.

Do not smoke if you are a woman taking birth control pills. Find a non-hormonal alternative for contraception.

Get some exercise every day. You don’t have to spend your whole life in the gym, but even a 30 minute walk most days of the week can be enough to keep your blood pressure low enough to reduce your stroke risk.

Follow a healthy diet. A poor diet is linked to high cholesterol, which can further increase your risk of having a stroke.

Manage your stress, which will help to keep blood pressure levels low.

One thing that is strongly in your favor is that your risk of stroke goes down dramatically very quickly after you quit smoking.

Although the risk of cancer remains increased for many years after you quit smoking, the risk of stroke goes down to nearly of a non-smoker in just 18 months on average.

METALS THAT DISCOLOR SKIN - When a ring turns your finger green, it's either because of a chemical reaction between acids in your skin and the metal of the ring or a reaction between another substance on your hand, such as a lotion, and the metal of the ring. There are several metals that oxidize or react with your skin to produce a discoloration.

Metals That
Discolor Skin
Why Do Rings Turn Your Finger Green? Meet the Metals That Discolor Skin
bt Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D.
Have you ever had a ring turn your finger green or wondered why some people say rings turn their fingers green?
The reason this happens is because of the metal content of the ring.
Here's a look at what's happening.
When a ring turns your finger green, it's either because of a chemical reaction between acids in your skin and the metal of the ring or a reaction between another substance on your hand, such as a lotion, and the metal of the ring.
There are several metals that oxidize or react with your skin to produce a discoloration.
You can get a noticeable green ring around your finger from wearing a ring made out of copper.
Some rings are pure copper, while others have a plating of another metal over copper or the copper may be part of the alloy (e.g., sterling silver).
The common green color is not harmful of itself, though some people experience an itchy rash or other sensitivity reaction to the metal and may wish to avoid exposure to it.
A common culprit is silver, which is found in sterling silver jewelry, plating for inexpensive jewelry, and as an alloying metal in most gold jewelry.
Acids cause the silver to oxidize, which produces tarnish. The tarnish can leave a dark ring on your finger.
If you are sensitive to metals, you may see a discoloration from wearing a ring containing nickel, though most likely this will be a red ring and may be associated with inflammation.

HOW TO AVOID GETTING A GREEN FINGER FROM A RING

Even silver and gold jewelry can produce a discoloration, so advice for avoiding a green finger isn't as simple as just avoiding cheap jewelry.
However, certain metals are less likely to turn green than others.
You should have good luck with stainless steel jewelry, platinum jewelry and rhodium plated jewelry, which includes nearly all white gold.
Also, you'll greatly reduce the chance of any ring turning your finger green if you take care to keep soap, lotions and other chemicals away from your ring.
Remove your rings before bathing or swimming, especially in saltwater.
Some people apply a polymer coating to their rings to act as a barrier between their skin and the metal of the ring.
Nail polish is one option. Be aware you'll need to reapply the coating from time to time, since it will wear away.

LIGHTNING STRIKES - Lightning always occurs with thunderstorms, but it isn't necessary for a storm to be directly overhead for you to be in danger of a lightning strike. If you are outdoors when a thunderstorm rolls up, it can be tempting to want to stall as long as possible before going indoors. But how do you know when it's time to stop what you're doing and head inside?

Lightning Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
Know When You're at High Risk From a Lightning Strike!

Nothing ruins a summer cookout, dip in the pool, or camping trip like a thunderstorm..
If you are outdoors when a thunderstorm rolls up, it can be tempting to want to stall as long as possible before going indoors.
But how do you know when it's time to stop what you're doing and head inside?
Keep a lookout for these signs; they'll warn you when it's time to seek shelter indoors and when lightning may be about to strike you.

THE THREAT OF LIGHTNING EXISTS AT ALL TIMES DURING A THUNDERSTORM

Lightning always occurs with thunderstorms, but it isn't necessary for a storm to be directly overhead for you to be in danger of a lightning strike.
The threat of lightning actually starts as a thunderstorm approaches, peaks when the storm is overhead, and then gradually diminishes as the storm moves away.

CLOUD-TO-GROUND LIGHTNING IS NEAR IF...

If you notice one or more of these early signs of an approaching storm, you should seek shelter immediately to reduce your risk of lightning injury or death.
·  rapidly growing cumulonimbus cloud. Although cumulonimbus clouds appear bright white and form in sunny skies, don't be fooled—they're the beginning stage of a developing thunderstorm! If you notice them growing taller and taller up in the sky, you can rest assured a storm is in-the-making and soon headed your way.
·  Increasing winds and a darkening sky. These are telltale signs of an approaching storm.
·  Audible thunder. Thunder is the sound created by lightning, so if thunder can be heard, lightning is near. You can determine how near (in miles) by counting the number of seconds between thunderclaps and dividing that number by 5.
·  A severe thunderstorm warning. The National Weather Service issues a severe thunderstorm warning when severe storms have been detected on weather radar, or confirmed by storm spotters. Cloud-to-ground lightning is often a main threat of such storms.

SEEK SHELTER HERE, AND FAST!

The best places to seek shelter from lightning are:
·  Enclosed buildings/structures, and
·  Vehicles with all windows rolled up.

HOW YOUR BODY WARNS OF A LIGHTNING STRIKE

When lightning makes a close or direct strike to you, you might experience one or more of these warning signs a few seconds beforehand:
·  Your hair standing up on end
·  Tingling skin
·  A metallic taste in your mouth
·  The smell of chlorine/swimming pool (This is ozone, which is produced when nitrogen oxides from lightning interact with other chemicals and sunlight.)
·  Sweaty palms
·  A vibrating, buzzing, or crackling sound coming from metal objects around you.
If any of these happen, there may be nothing you can do to avoid being struck and possibly injured or killed.
However, if you find you do have a moment to react, you should run as fast as you can to a safer location.
Running limits the time both of your feet are on the ground at any one time, which reduces the threat from ground current (That is, lightning that travels outward from the strike point along the ground surface).
