HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP AND THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC - Starting around 1970, manufacturers began adding high fructose corn syrup to their products. On November 6, 1984, both Coca-Cola and Pepsi announced that they were switching from sugar to high fructose corn syrup in their soft drinks. Today, HFCS is found in cookies, crackers, soft drinks, salad dressings, catsups, cereals, flavored yogurts, ice cream, preserved meats, canned fruits and vegetables, soups, and beers. It's even used on sealable envelopes, stamps, and in aspirin to make it taste better. Consumption of HFCS has been implicated in many of health problems, including weight gain, type-2 diabetes, hypertension, high triglyceride levels, gout, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and kidney stones.

High Fructose Corn Syrup and the Obesity Epidemic

The addition of high fructose corn syrup to our foods has led to a dramatic increase in obesity rates and a startling increase in disease.

In 2018, adult obesity rates in the U.S. exceeded 35% in seven states, 30% in 29 states, and 25% in 48 states.
West Virginia had the highest rate at 38.1%, and Colorado had the lowest rate at 22.6%.
Among other countries, only Mexico surpasses the U.S. in obesity rates.
How did we get so fat? The answer might surprise you.
In 1841, Orlando Jones developed a process for separating corn starch from corn kernels.
A year later, Thomas Kingsford began creating corn starch, and you can still buy his product today as Kingsford's Corn Starch.
Twenty years later, corn syrup was first created, but it wasn't as sweet as the syrups created with a cane or beet sugar.
Fast forward to 1967, when high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) was first produced, using a process that converted dextrose sugar into sweeter fructose sugar.
While cane and beet sugars contain 50% fructose, HFCS contains 55% fructose.

"...we subsidize high-fructose corn syrup ... but not carrots" -- Michael Pollan, "The Omnivore's Dilemma"

The United States spends over $20 billion a year on farm subsidies, with 39% of America's 2.1 million farms receiving them.
The lion's share of the subsidies goes to the producers of five crops: corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and rice.
Corn is the largest crop grown by American farmers, and the U.S. is the number one producer of corn. U.S. production accounts for 32% of all corn grown in the world.
That means that corn is cheap to buy, and that fact wasn't lost on food manufacturers.
Starting around 1970, manufacturers began adding high fructose corn syrup to their products.
Consumption of HFCS in the U.S. went from zero in 1970, to 60 pounds per person per year by 2000, and HFCS accounted for half of every person's sugar consumption per year.
In Europe, the European Union holds HFCS (known as isoglucose) to a production quota, and in Japan, it is regulated by the government who holds it to a 27–30% share of the Japanese sweetener market.
Consumption of HFCS has been implicated in many of health problems, including weight gain, type-2 diabetes, hypertension, high triglyceride levels, gout, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and kidney stones.
1. HFCS causes weight gain. Because it is not metabolized by the body in the same way as regular sugar, fructose converts to fat more quickly, and it inhibits the production of leptin, the satiety-inducing hormone.
2. HFCS causes inflammation. Because it is harder for the intestine to absorb fructose, it has to use extra energy called liver adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
The intestine usually uses this extra energy to strengthen its lining, so that harmful bacteria is kept out, and semi-digested food is kept in and doesn't leak out, enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation.
Inflammation is one of the major factors in diseases, such as diabetes, dementia, heart disease, cancer, and rapid aging.
3. HFCS causes fatty liver disease. HFCS is not digested by your body in the same way as regular sugar. HFCS is quickly absorbed in the bloodstream and travels to the liver, where it triggers lipogenesis, a process that produces liver fat.
This, in turn, triggers non-alcoholic fatty acid, which contributes to high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), diabetes, and thyroid problems.
4. HFCS causes gout. While gout may sound like something out of Elizabethan England, it is, in fact, a debilitating condition. Consumption of fructose causes excess uric acid production, which leads to gout.
Gout is an extremely painful type of arthritis that occurs mainly in the foot. Men and women who drink an excess of fructose-rich soda have a higher incidence of gout.
5. HFCS causes kidney stones. Kidney stones are small, hard mineral deposits, and consumption of fructose has been linked to an increase in the production of calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, which combine to create kidney stones.
When kidney stones block the ureter, patients experience extreme pain, painful urination, blood in the urine, nausea, vomiting, and fever.
6. HFCS causes Type-2 diabetes. 90% of diabetes' patients suffer from this variety of the disease.
When you eat food, it is broken down by your body into glucose, which is used by cells for energy. The hormone insulin, which is produced in the pancreas, transfers that glucose to the cells.
In Type 2 diabetes, the body produces insulin, but the cells are unable to receive the glucose properly. The body produces more and more insulin until it exhausts its supply. Then, your blood sugar level can rise to dangerous levels.
Increased blood sugar can damage your kidneys, rot your teeth, and lead to blindness, heart disease, and stroke.
7. HFCS causes elevated Triglyceride levels. Your body converts any extra calories it receives from food into fat. Triglycerides are a type of fat that is found in your blood.
Studies have shown that people who consume a lot of HFCS have significantly increased triglyceride levels which increase your risk for coronary artery disease and heart attacks.
8. HFCS elevates LDL. High-density lipoproteins (HDL) are the good kind, and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are the harmful kind of cholesterol.
Over time, LDL accumulates in your arteries, narrowing them and preventing the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your heart. When an artery becomes completely blocked, this is a heart attack.
High fructose consumption significantly raises LDL levels, and overweight children who consumed a lot of fructose had increased LDL levels.
9. HFCS causes hypertension. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood flow against your blood vessels is too strong. This damages those vessels and eventually damages your heart.
One in three Americans suffers from hypertension, and most strokes and heart attacks occur in people suffering from high blood pressure.
High intake of HFCS has been positively associated with elevated hypertension.

Breakfast - the most dangerous meal of the day

So, how can you avoid HFCS? Read food labels!
If a food contains HFCS, put it back on the shelf. Especially considering what you eat for breakfast - cereal, muffins, yogurt, pancakes, waffles, cereal bars, jam and jelly, bagels, donuts, and toast are all brimming with HFCS.
It's even in your favorite low-fat or fat-free yogurt, which contain more than 40 grams of HFCS.
And, the biggest culprit when it comes to HFCS – soda.
Coke's information page states, "Depending on where you are in the world, we’ll either use sugar or HFCS. We generally use HFCS in places where corn is more widely available. In places where sugarcane or sugar beet is more available, we’ll use those instead."
In answer to the question "Is high fructose corn syrup bad for you?"
Coke states, "No. We are committed to product safety and quality. All ingredients we use – including HFCS – are safe."

YOUR HOME'S PLUMBING SYSTEM - The plumbing system in your home is composed of two separate subsystems. One subsystem brings freshwater in, and the other takes wastewater out. The water that comes into your home is under pressure. It enters your home under enough pressure to allow it to travel upstairs, around corners, or wherever else it's needed. As water comes into your home, it passes through a meter that registers the amount you use. The main water shutoff, or stop, valve is typically located close to the meter.

Your home's supply and drainage system must always be two distinct subsystems, with no overlapping. At the fixtures (bridges between the two systems), the air admitted by the vent stack and vent pipes keeps the traps sealed and prevents sewer gases from backing up through the drains. See more plumbing pictures.
..........................
Some sink traps have a clean-out plug that enables you to clean the trap without having to remove it from the drain.
Your Home’s Plumbing System
Plumbing Basics
BY FIX-IT CLUB

Plumbing follows the basic laws of nature – gravity, pressure, water seeking its own level.
Knowing this, you can understand its "mysteries" and make dozens of fixes to your home's plumbing system. You can save yourself time, trouble, and money!
The plumbing system in your home is composed of two separate subsystems.
In a plumbing emergency, it's vital that you quickly close the main shutoff valve. Otherwise, when a pipe bursts, it can flood your house in no time.
If the emergency is confined to a sink, tub, or toilet, however, you may not want to turn off your entire water supply. Therefore, most fixtures should have individual stop valves.
Water from the main supply is immediately ready for your cold water needs. The hot water supply, however, requires another step. One pipe carries water from the cold water system to your water heater.
From the heater, a hot water line carries the heated water to all the fixtures, out-lets, and appliances that require hot water.
A thermostat on the heater maintains the temperature you select by turning the device's heating elements on and off as required.
The normal temperature setting for a home water heater is between 140 degrees F and 160 degrees F, but 120 degrees F is usually adequate and is also more economical.
Some automatic dishwashers require higher temperature water, though many of these have a water heater within them that boosts the temperature another 20 degrees F.
Drainage Systems
Whether your home is on a sewer or septic system, the systems within your home are essentially the same.
Drainage systems do not depend on pressure, as supply systems do. Instead, waste matter leaves your house because the drainage pipes all pitch, or angle, downward.
Gravity pulls the waste along. The sewer line continues this downward flow to a sewage treatment facility or a septic tank.
While the system sounds simple, there's more to it, including vents, traps, and clean outs.
The vents sticking up from the roof of your house allow air to enter the drainpipes.
If there were no air supply coming from the vents, wastewater would not flow out properly and the water in the traps would need to be siphoned away.
Traps are vital components of the drainage system. You can see a trap under every sink. It is the curved or S-shape section of pipe under a drain.
Water flows from the basin with enough force to go through the trap and out through the drainpipe, but enough water stays in the trap afterward to form a seal that prevents sewer gas from backing up into your home.
Every fixture must have a trap. Toilets are self-trapped and don't require an additional trap at the drain.
Bathtubs frequently have drum traps, not only to form a seal against sewer gas but also to collect hair and dirt in order to prevent clogged drains.
Some kitchen sinks have grease traps to collect grease that might otherwise cause clogging.
Because grease and hair are generally the causes of drain clogs, traps often have clean-out plugs that give you easier access to remove or break up any blockage.
Since a drainage system involves all of these components, it is usually referred to as the DWV: the drain-waste-vent system.
If water is to flow out freely and waste is to exit properly, all components of the DWV must be present and in good working order.
Examine the pipes in the basement or crawl space under your house to help you understand the system better.
Supply and Drainage Subsystems
The supply and drainage subsystems are two distinct operations, with no overlapping between them.
There are bridges between the two, however, and the bridges are what make the plumbing system worth having.
In plumbing jargon, any bridge between the supply and drainage systems is a fixture.
Toilets, sinks, and tubs are fixtures. In addition, an outside faucet is a fixture and so is a washing machine. All devices that draw freshwater and discharge wastewater are fixtures, and all are designed to keep the supply and drainage systems strictly segregated.
Some fixtures have individual supply shutoff valves so you don't need to close the main shutoff to repair them.
It's a good idea to make sure everyone in the family knows the location of the main shutoff valve in your house as well as how to use it.
You may want to tag the main shutoff valve so anyone can easily find it.
Before you embark on any plumbing repairs, always turn off the water supply to the fixture or the main shutoff.
In addition, check with your local plumbing code official before you add or change any pipe in your house.
You will learn what is allowed and what is prohibited and whether or not a homeowner is allowed to do his or her own work.
If you get the green light, you can save yourself a lot of money by doing your own repairs.

ANSWERING CELL PHONE WHILE CHARGING - It would seem excessive to label the device "an instrument of death." Which is not to say no one has ever been injured by a cell phone. Over the past dozen or more years there have been numerous reports of cell phones catching fire or "exploding," causing injury to their owners. Nearly all of these incidents were blamed on the use of unauthorized and/or faulty batteries.

 Answering Cell Phone While Charging
Is It Dangerous to Answer Your Cell Phone While It's Charging?
Learn if this long-running viral alert is true or false
By David Emery
A viral e-mail message claims people have been killed by electrocution, fire or explosion when they answered a mobile phone that was plugged in to recharge the battery.
However, this warning (which has been circulating since 2004) and subsequent variants are overblown -- they stemmed from a single news report about an Indian man who was allegedly fatally electrocuted while answering a cell phone that was plugged in for charging.
Assuming the report was accurate, it's fair to conclude that either the phone or the charger was defective, given that
1) no other reports of people being electrocuted while using a charging cell phone have been validated,
2) under normal circumstances the current flowing into a charging cell phone ought not to be strong enough to kill anyone, and
3) neither manufacturers nor consumer agencies warn customers against using mobile phones while they are being charged.
Under the circumstances, therefore, it would seem excessive to label the device "an instrument of death."
Which is not to say no one has ever been injured by a cell phone.
Over the past dozen or more years there have been numerous reports of cell phones catching fire or "exploding," causing injury to their owners.
Nearly all of these incidents were blamed on the use of unauthorized and/or faulty batteries.

Please read this & share it.
Important information to every one.
Today again a boy died in Mumbai, of attending a call while his mobile was at charge. That time he had sudden vibration 2 his heart & fingers were burnt. So please don't attend calls while charging u'r cell phone. Please pass this 2 all who u care. When phone's battery is low to last bar, don't answer the phone, becuase the radiation is 1000 times stronger.

VERY IMPORTANT..PLEASE READ
Never, ever answer a cell phone while it is being CHARGED!!
A few days ago, a person was recharging his cell phone at home.
Just at that time a call came and he answered it with the instrument still connected to the outlet.
After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud.
His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers.
He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Cell phones are a very useful modern invention.
However, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument of death.
Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet!
Example #3:
Email contributed by Raja, Aug. 22, 2005:
Subject: Don't use your cell phone while charging
Dear All,
I send this message to make you aware of the danger potential of the commonly used cellular phone. A few days ago, a close relative of mine was recharging his cellphone at home. Just at that time a call came and he attended to that call with the instrument still connected to the mains.
After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cellphone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud. His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with weak heartbeats and burnt fingers. He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Cellphone is a very useful modern invention. However, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument of death.
Never use the cellphone while it is hooked to the mains! This is my humble plea.
Sincerely,
Dr. D. Suresh Kumar R&D
Safety Precautions
To prevent any potential mishaps, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recommended taking safety precautions which include the following:
·   Don't use incompatible/unauthorized cell phone batteries and chargers.
·   Don't tamper with the battery or allow it to be punctured, crushed, or come into contact with metal objects outside the phone.
·   Avoid damaging the phone by dropping it, keeping it where it can become overheated, or allowing it to get wet.
·   Follow manufacturers' instructions for battery usage, storage, and recharging.
In July 2013, it was announced that Apple Inc. was investigating the death of a woman allegedly killed by an electric shock when she answered her iPhone while it was charging.
