10 Facts About Cancer Cells
Regina Bailey

Cancer cells are abnormal cells that reproduce rapidly, maintaining their ability to replicate and grow.
This unchecked cell growth results in the development of masses of tissue or tumors.
The tumors continue to grow and some, known as malignant tumors, can spread from one location to another.
Cancer cells differ from normal cells in a number or ways.
Cancer cells don't experience biological aging, maintain their ability to divide, and do not respond to self-termination signals.
Below are ten interesting facts about cancer cells that may surprise you.
1. There Are over 100 Types of Cancer
There are many different types of cancer and these cancers may develop in any type of body cell. Cancer types are typically named for the organ, tissue, or cells in which they develop. The most common type of cancer is carcinoma or cancer of the skin. Carcinomas develop in epithelial tissue, which covers the outside of the body and lines organs, vessels, and cavities. Sarcomas form in muscle, bone, and soft connective tissues including adipose, blood vessels, lymph vessels, tendons, and ligaments. Leukemia is cancer that originates in bone marrow cells that form white blood cells. Lymphoma develops in white blood cells called lymphocytes. This type of cancer affects B cells and T cells.
2. Some Viruses Produce Cancer Cells
Cancer cell development may result from a number of factors including exposure to chemicals, radiation, ultraviolet light, and chromosome replication errors. In addition, viruses also have the ability to cause cancer by altering genes. Cancer viruses are estimated to cause 15 to 20% of all cancers. These viruses change cells by integrating their genetic material with the host cell's DNA. The viral genes regulate cell development, giving the cell the ability to undergo abnormal new growth. The Epstein-Barr virus has been linked to Burkitt's lymphoma, the hepatitis B virus can cause liver cancer, and human papilloma viruses can cause cervical cancer.
3. About One-third of All Cancer Cases Are Preventable
According to the World Health Organization, about 30% of all cancer cases are preventable. It has been estimated that only 5-10% of all cancers are attributed to hereditary gene defect. The rest are related to environmental pollutants, infections, and lifestyle choices (smoking, poor diet, and physical inactivity). The single greatest preventable risk factor for cancer development globally is smoking and tobacco use. About 70% of lung cancer cases are attributed to smoking.
4. Cancer Cells Crave Sugar
Cancer cells use much more glucose to grow than normal cells use. Glucose is a simple sugar required for the production of energy through cellular respiration. Cancer cells use sugar at a high rate to continue to divide. These cells do not obtain their energy solely through glycolysis, the process of "splitting sugars" to produce energy. Tumor cell mitochondria supply the energy needed to promote abnormal growth associated with cancer cells. Mitochondria provide an amplified energy source that also makes tumor cells more resistant to chemotherapy.
5. Cancer Cells Hide in the Body
Cancer cells can avoid the body's immune system by hiding among healthy cells. For example, some tumors secrete a protein that is also secreted by lymph nodes. The protein allows the tumor to transform its outer layer into something that resembles lymph tissue. These tumors appear as healthy tissue and not cancerous tissue. As a result, immune cells do not detect the tumor as a harmful substance and it is allowed to grow and spread unchecked in the body. Other cancer cells avoid chemotherapy drugs by hiding in compartments in the body. Some leukemia cells avoid treatment by taking cover in compartments in bone.
6. Cancer Cells Morph and Change Shape
Cancer cells undergo changes to avoid immune system defenses, as well as to guard against radiation and chemotherapy treatment. Cancerous epithelial cells, for example, go from resembling healthy cells with defined shapes to resembling loose connective tissue. Scientists relate this process to that of a snake that sheds its skin. The ability to change shape has been attributed to the inactivation of molecular switches called microRNAs. These small regulatory RNA molecules have the ability to regulate gene expression. When certain microRNAs become inactivated, tumor cells gain the ability to change shape.
7. Cancer Cells Divide Uncontrollably and Produce Extra Daughter Cells
Cancer cells can have gene mutations or chromosome mutations that affect the reproductive properties of the cells. A normal cell dividing by mitosis produces two daughter cells. Cancer cells, however, can divide into three or more daughter cells. The newly developed cancer cells may either lose or gain extra chromosomes during division. Most malignant tumors have cells that have lost chromosomes.
8. Cancer Cells Need Blood Vessels to Survive
One of the telltale signs of cancer is the rapid increase of new blood vessel formation known as angiogenesis. Tumors need the nutrients provided by blood vessels to grow. Blood vessel endothelium is responsible for both normal angiogenesis and tumor angiogenesis. Cancer cells send signals to nearby healthy cells influencing them to develop new blood vessels that supply the cancer cells. Studies have shown that when new blood vessel formation is prevented, tumors stop growing.
9.  Cancer Cells Can Spread From One Area to Another
Cancer cells can metastasize or spread from one location to another through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Cancer cells activate receptors in blood vessels that allow them to exit blood circulation and spread to tissues and organs. The cancer cells release chemical messengers called chemokines that induce an immune response and enable them to pass through blood vessels into the surrounding tissue.
10. Cancer Cells Avoid Programmed Cell Death
When normal cells experience DNA damage, tumor suppressor proteins are released that cause the cells to undergo programmed cell death or apoptosis. Due to gene mutation, cancer cells lose the ability to detect DNA damage and therefore the ability to self-destruct.

IONIZED WATER - Are There Real Health Benefits From Drinking This Type Of Water? - The term is essentially meaningless. Pure water can never be alkaline or acidic, nor can it be made so by electrolysis. The claims about the health benefits of drinking alkaline water are not supported by credible scientific evidence.

Ionized Water

Are There Real Health Benefits From Drinking This Type Of Water?
What is "ionized water"?
The term is essentially meaningless.
True, it is possible for water to contain dissolved ions (electrically-charged atoms or molecules), but that's something else again.
Almost all waters found in nature acquire ions such as calcium and bicarbonate as they come into contact with rocks and sediments.
Even the purest rainwater contains some hydrogen- and bicarbonate ions that are formed when it picks up carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Pure water consists almost entirely of H2O molecules loosely bound in a network-like structure in which individual molecules are constantly changing partners.
Water molecules exhibit a very slight tendency to dissociate ("ionize") into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions: H2O ; H+ + OH- but the extent of this reaction is severely limited by the fact that the reverse of this reaction is much more rapid, so that on the average, only about two out of every billion H2O molecules is dissociated.
No electrical device or chemical additive is capable of increasing these ion concentrations in pure water above this very minute level which is so small that for most practical purposes pure water can be considered to be ion-free, as evidenced by the fact that it will not conduct an electric current.
Acidic and alkaline water, pH all water and all aqueous solutions contain both H+ and OH– ions. If the quantity of H+ exceeds that of the OH-, the water is said to be acidic.
If there are more OH- ions than H+, the water is alkaline. Pure water, which contains equal numbers of both ions, is said to be neutral.
Chemists express the degree of acidity or alkalinity on the pH scale which runs from about 0 to 14. Acidic solutions have pH values of less than 7, alkaline solutions more than 7.
Pure water, being neutral, has a pH of exactly 7. Each unit on the pH scale represents a hundred-fold change in the ratio of the two kinds of ions; for example, if the pH is 8, there are 100 times as many OH- ions than H+ ions (that is, [H+] = 10-8, [OH-] = 10-6.)
Whether a water is acidic or alkaline, it will always contain equal numbers of positive and negative electric charges.
Since alkaline water contains an excess of OH- ions, it must also contain some other kind of positive ion in addition to H+ in order to equalize the opposite charges.
This extra positive ion is almost always a metal ion such as sodium, calcium or magnesium.
Similarly, an acidic water must always contain negative ions in addition to OH-; the most common of these is bicarbonate HCO3-. This means that waters whose pH differs from 7 are never "pure" in the chemical sense.
"Ionized water" is one of many products and panaceas that the wonky-water wellness industry flogs onto the large segment of the general public that lacks the scientific background to distinguish scientific fact from pseudoscientific hype when the two are closely intertwined.
What most of these treatment devices actually sell are grossly overpriced electrical devices that purport to produce "ionized" and alkaline water by the process of electrolysis.
Here's basically the bottom line when it comes to ionized water...
·     "Ionized water" is nothing more than sales fiction; the term is meaningless to chemists.
·     Most water that is fit for drinking is too unconductive to undergo significant electrolysis.
·     Pure water can never be alkaline or acidic, nor can it be made so by electrolysis.
·     Groundwater containing metal ions such as calcium and magnesium can be rendered slightly alkaline by electrolysis, but after it hits the highly acidic gastric fluid in the stomach, its alkalinity is gone.
·     The idea that one must consume alkaline water to neutralize the effects of acidic foods is ridiculous; we get rid of excess acid by exhaling carbon dioxide.
·     The claims about the health benefits of drinking alkaline water are not supported by credible scientific evidence.
·      There is nothing wrong with drinking slightly acidic waters such as rainwater. "Body pH" is a meaningless concept; different parts of the body (and even of individual cells) can have widely different pH values.
·     If you really want to de-acidify your stomach (at the possible cost of interfering with protein digestion), why spend hundreds of dollars for an electrolysis device when you can take calcium-magnesium pills, Alka-Seltzer or Milk of Magnesia?
·     Electrolysis devices are generally worthless for treating water for health enhancement, removal of common impurities, disinfection, and scale control.
In the end, it's better to keep your money in your pocket before shelling out a lot of money on an ionizer.

GMO’s, or genetically modified organisms, is a form of scientific farming where crops are pumped full of chemicals to increase yield and size of crops.
It is highly debated and becoming more and more common in everyday foods.
However, just like a coin, it also has its two sides. Read on to know the advantage and disadvantages of GMO’s.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF GMO’S?

1. GMO’s is an effective way to provide farmers a larger profit while spending less time a resources.
2. Economically beneficial because they are used to repel pests, which prevents the need for pesticides to be used.
3. This is also known to decrease food prices due to advanced crops and lower cost. GMO’s will certainly help families that cannot afford to buy the food they need for everyday living.
4. Less starvation in the world due to the fact that it cuts food prices.
5. It is more nourishing to the body, which is proven to be effective.
6. The precise evaluation and testing of GMO crops and other products. In fact, according to research, it is safer as compared to traditional crops.

DISADVANTAGES OF GMO’S

1. GMO’s could be dangerous to some insects. This is because the new genes of the crops can be deadly to certain insects like butterflies that are not actually dangerous to crops.
2. The people who oppose GMO’s aren’t taste good as compared to naturally produced crops.
3. It doesn’t need enough pesticide because the crop itself is dangerous to some insects.
4. The tariff, quota and trade issues may become a problem in regions and other countries.
5. Critics claim that GMO’s can cause particular disease or illnesses.
6. As the major producer of GMO, it could start an issue in some population that are not agree in American way
7. Genetically modified crops may also cause a threat to the environment. This is because it is not a natural way to plant and cultivate crops.
8. Possible greed or self-indulgence of the manufacturers and companies of GMO’s. This is due to the profit that can be acquired.
Genetically modified crops or GMO’s is undeniably an excellent help in case you want to find ways and methods on how to save on the budget for your food.
This is a very effective means on how to provide the food for the people.
Before you apply this agriculture method, it is important to study the pros and cons of it.
This can help you determine if GMO’s is the right option for you to get the right profit, it is important to weight things before you decide.

OSMOSIS AND DIALYSIS - While both osmosis and dialysis are purification processes, it is the solvent that passes through the semi-permeable membrane in case of osmosis; it is solute that passes through the membrane during dialysis. Osmosis is used in many fields of nutrition and medicine, and for purification of water; whereas dialysis is mainly used to purify the blood of the patients who suffer from renal failure.

Difference Between
Osmosis and Dialysis

by olivia.
Osmosis versus Dialysis
Students of science know about osmosis which is an important biological process going on inside the cells of all plants and animals.
This is the process of passage of water through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration.
Most people however, know the word reverse osmosis, courtesy of water purification companies today.
There is another term, dialysis, which is a dread word for many, as it refers to the help given to a patient who has suffered from renal failure, as his kidneys cannot purify blood on their own.
Both being cleaning processes, it is interesting to know what separates these two processes. This article attempts to highlight the differences between osmosis and dialysis.
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis or diffusion of water molecules across a selective semi- permeable membrane (cell membrane is one such barrier) allows passage of water from an area of low concentration of solute to an area of high concentration of solute.
This process is unique in the sense that this barrier does not allow passage of larger molecules like starch and protein. Thus osmosis involves passage of solvent from one side of the membrane to the other side.
What is Dialysis?
On the other hand, dialysis is the process of purification of blood by the kidneys where waste material from blood is excreted from the kidneys thereby purifying the blood. It is thus, a selective passage of solute.
Difference Between Osmosis and Dialysis
The concepts of osmosis and dialysis find important applications in the field of waterpurification and medicine.
Osmosis tells us how a man who drinks salty ocean water gets dehydrated and dies. The same concept applies to freshwater fish when it is put in salty backwaters or in the ocean.
Water treatment plants and clinical analysis and sterilization processes make use of osmosis to remove dissolved impurities in water.
Dialysis is mostly used to provide help to patients who suffer from kidney failure as their kidneys cannot perform blood purification on their own. This is known as haemodialysis.
Blood from the arteries of the patient is sent through a machine called hemodialyzer (artificial kidney) that removes impurities and waste material from the blood. The blood is then sent back to the arteries.
There is another process called peritoneal dialysis where the blood is purified inside the body of the patient.
The machine that purifies blood makes use of all three processes called diffusion, ultrafiltration and osmosis to come up with purified blood.
Though dialysis is vital for patients suffering from renal failure, it is an artificial process and only a substitute for natural purification of blood by the kidneys.
Dialysis fails to produce a hormone for the regulation of red blood cell production inside the body that takes place naturally during blood purification by the kidneys.
Osmosis versus Dialysis In Brief:
•  While both osmosis and dialysis are purification processes, it is the solvent that passes through the semi-permeable membrane in case of osmosis; it is solute that passes through the membrane during dialysis.
•  Osmosis is used in many fields of nutrition and medicine, and for purification of water; whereas dialysis is mainly used to purify the blood of the patients who suffer from renal failure.
